Palliative care at the centre, everyday care around it
People with serious illness rarely need just one thing. We provide what a community clinic does best, close to home, and coordinate the rest through referral.
- 01Palliative care, in the clinic and at home.Pain and symptom relief, emotional and spiritual support, home visits and bereavement support.
- 02Everyday clinical care.Consultations, wound care and follow-up of long-term conditions.
- 03Community outreach and education.Health talks, screening camps and palliative care awareness.
- 04Referral and linkage.Hospital and specialist care when needed, and care at home afterwards.
Uganda leads Africa in palliative care, yet most people who need it still go without.
- 11%
- of Ugandans who need palliative care are estimated to receive it, although 88.5% live in a district with an accredited service.
- 4 of 13
- accredited palliative care facilities in Acholi received oral morphine in 2019. Nationally, 77 of 226 did.
- 30,000
- estimated new cancer cases a year in Uganda, with around 18,000 cancer deaths.
- 25.9
- doctors, nurses and midwives per 10,000 Ugandans, against a WHO benchmark of 44.5.
A service somewhere in the district is not care at the bedside. We close that last mile in Gulu, in the clinic and at home.
